Who is the My Housing Options Toolkit for?
The Toolkit is for:
- People with disability: To help explore their housing needs, preferences, and goals.
- Families, carers, supporters, advocates, housing and disability support providers: To guide person-centred conversations, provide tailored information, and support people with disability in thinking about their housing options.
What can I find in the Toolkit?
You’ll find:
- Downloadable documents including: My Housing Options Workbook, My Housing Options Guide, and additional resources and worksheets
- Activities to help individuals reflect and make informed housing decisions
- Information about different housing options and supports
- Videos that showcase other people’s experience around finding housing suitable to their needs.
How do I use the Toolkit?
- I am a person with disability: Use the Workbook and activities to explore your housing needs, understand your support needs, and plan for your future at your own pace. It’s not a one-time thing, come back as your housing goals change.
- I am carer, supporter or service provider: The website is a great resource for trusted people, supporting someone with a disability on their housing journey. Use the Guide to help deliver tailored, person-centred support.
Is the Toolkit only for people looking for a house right now?
No, it’s for anyone thinking about their future housing needs, whether you’re planning ahead or ready to make a move now.
What makes this Toolkit different?
The My Housing Options Toolkit resources use a person-centred approach and were co-designed with people with disability, ensuring the content is relevant, practical, and respectful of individual experiences.
Can I use this Toolkit on my own, or do I need support?
You can absolutely start on your own, but we encourage you to work through the content with someone you trust, like a family member, support person, or advocate, especially when making big decisions.
What kinds of housing options are explained?
The Toolkit covers a range of options, including:
- Private rentals
- Social and community housing
- Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)
- Supported Independent Living (SIL)
- Living with family or housemates
It also acknowledges the challenges around availability, affordability, and eligibility of housing.
Is the Toolkit only for NDIS participants?
No. While some information may relate to NDIS supports, the Toolkit is for anyone with a disability who wants to understand their housing choices.
Do I have to finish everything in the Toolkit at once?
Not at all. The Toolkit resources are designed to be used over time. You can revisit sections whenever you need to.
Can service providers or housing providers use the Toolkit too?
Yes, the Toolkit is a great resource for professionals to better support people with disability in their housing planning.
